COMMUNITY APPRECIATION DAY!
Community Appreciation DayGuardian Martial Arts and Fitness will be hosting a Community Appreciation Day from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 9. Featured will be a free children’s self-defense class and free hot dogs and chips. On Aug. 1, Guardian will treat kids to “Outdoor Extravaganza,” a fun-filled day of outdoor activities, including team-building skills, challenge events, an obstacle course and lunch. The Friends of the Garden City Historical Museum are continuing their fundraising efforts, selling engraved brick pavers and renting the Grande Parlour for social and business occasions.
The bricks are $50 for the 4-inch by 8-inch size that has up to three lines. The 8-inch by 8-inch bricks are $75 and have room for up to six lines of text. The Lathers General Store is open from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays, offering a variety of collectibles and gift items. The Garden City Hospital Health Coach, a mobile unit that provides services to address health care needs for the community, for those who are low income and uninsured or underinsured, is at the Maplewood Center the third Wednesday of the month. Services offered include health screenings and assessments, health coaching and patient care follow-ups. People must be 18 years or older to qualify for the program at no cost, regardless of their insurance status. The mobile unit parks on the Maplewood side of the center from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 734-458-4330. DAV SERVICES!

AUTOS FOR AUTISM!
The Burger Autistic School Association will hold its 14th annual Autos for Autism beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, July 14, on the front lawn of Garden City High School, 6500 Middlebelt, north of Ford. In addition to a variety of classic and custom vehicles, there will music, raffle baskets, 50/50 raffle, a kids table with face painting and crafts, Smiggins the Clown, Star Wars characters, and DJ support from Sweet Release. Shultz’s Backyard BBQ also will be on site to serve up beef brisket, pulled pork, brats, and hot dogs. Chips and soft drinks also will be available. The first 200 cars will get a dash plaque and goody bags. There also will be awards given for Best of Show, Club Participation and 10 Celebrity Judge Awards, as well as 10 first- and second- place class category awards. Participating auto owners choose the winners for each of the 10 categories and the best of show. Advance registration is $10 and $15 the day of the event. The Garden City Kiwanis Club is recruiting new members to help provide assistance to the disadvantaged residents of the community — especially children — who are having a difficult time during this economic recession. Founded in 1948, the Kiwanis Club of Garden City provides many community service projects each year, including a “Baby Shower” for the Garden City Family Resource Center, a continuing Food Pantry drive, the Trauma Doll Project for hospitalized children and the Third Grade Dictionary Project. The club meets at noon Thursdays at Amantea Restaurant on Warren Road at Venoy in Garden City.
